Teeth Whitening

A gradual, supervised way to lighten the natural shade of your teeth, planned around your own enamel and gums.

Overview

About Teeth Whitening

Professional whitening lightens the natural shade of your teeth using a gel held against them in trays made to fit your mouth. Because the trays are made from impressions of your own teeth, the gel stays where it is meant to be.

Whitening is a dental treatment and, in the UK, must be carried out by or under the prescription of a registered dental professional. That starts with an examination, because whitening is only appropriate once your teeth and gums are healthy.

Why patients choose it

Benefits

Assessed first

An examination comes before any whitening, so the cause of the shade is understood.

Custom trays

Made from impressions of your own teeth rather than a one-size tray.

Gradual and controlled

Worn over a planned period, so progress can be reviewed.

Guided throughout

You are shown how to use the trays and what to expect as you go.

Step by step

How the treatment works

  1. Examination

Teeth and gums are checked, and the cause of the discolouration discussed.

  2. Impressions

Moulds are taken so the trays fit your teeth closely.

  3. Fitting

Trays are fitted and you are shown exactly how to use the gel.

  4. At-home phase

You wear the trays as directed over the agreed period.

  5. Review

We check the result and your comfort, and discuss maintaining it.

Suitability

Who is it for?

Whitening may suit you if your teeth are healthy and you would like them lighter than their natural shade. It does not change the colour of crowns, veneers, bridges or fillings, so if you have restorations at the front of your mouth, your dentist will talk through what that means for the final result.

A professional assessment is always needed. The guidance on this page is general information, not advice about your own teeth. Whether this treatment is right for you can only be decided after an examination by one of our clinicians.

Treatment details

Suitability

Healthy teeth and gums first. Decay or gum disease is treated before whitening begins.

Sensitivity

Some people notice temporary sensitivity during whitening. Tell your dentist — it can usually be managed.

Restorations

Crowns, veneers, bridges and fillings do not change shade. These may need replacing to match afterwards.

Maintenance

Results fade gradually. Reducing staining foods and drinks helps; top-up gel may be available.

About these images. Every photograph here comes from Liphook Smile Studio's own website — none is stock and none is AI-generated. They are shown as a clinical gallery rather than as before-and-after pairs, because the source site does not state which image is which. Supply matched, consented pairs and they will replace these.
Questions

Teeth Whitening FAQs

If your question is not here, please ask when you contact the practice.

Is whitening safe?

When carried out by a registered dental professional following an examination, whitening is a well-established treatment. In the UK it is illegal for anyone who is not a registered dental professional to provide it.

How white will my teeth go?

That depends on your natural enamel and why your teeth are the shade they are. Your dentist will give you a realistic expectation for your teeth rather than promise a particular shade.

Will it work on crowns or veneers?

No. Whitening gel does not change the colour of dental materials. If you have restorations at the front, discuss the plan with your dentist first.

Does it hurt?

Whitening is not usually painful, though temporary sensitivity is common. Let us know if you experience it and we will adjust the approach.

How long does the result last?

It varies with diet and habits. Tea, coffee, red wine and smoking all shorten it. Your dentist will talk through maintaining the result.
