Crowns

A made-to-measure cover that protects a weakened tooth and restores its shape, strength and appearance.

Overview

About Crowns

A crown covers a tooth completely, restoring its shape and protecting what remains underneath. Crowns are often recommended where a tooth has broken, has a very large filling, or has had root canal treatment and needs protecting from further damage.

Crowns are made individually in a dental laboratory. Several materials are available, including metal-free options such as E-max and zirconia, and the right one depends on where the tooth sits, how much load it carries and how it needs to look.

Why patients choose it

Benefits

Protects the tooth

Covers and holds together a tooth weakened by damage or a large filling.

Restores function

Material choice

Metal-free options available where appearance matters most.

Matched to your teeth

Shade and shape chosen to suit the teeth around it.

Step by step

How the treatment works

  1. Assessment

The tooth is examined, usually with an x-ray, and the options explained.

  2. Preparation

The tooth is shaped to make room for the crown and an impression or scan is taken.

  3. Temporary

A temporary crown protects the tooth while the laboratory works.

  4. Fitting

The crown is tried in, the fit and shade checked, then cemented.

  5. Review

The bite is checked and you are shown how to care for it.

Suitability

Who is it for?

A crown may be suggested where a tooth is too damaged or heavily filled to be restored reliably with a filling. Your dentist will examine the tooth, usually with an x-ray, and explain why a crown is being recommended rather than a simpler option.

A professional assessment is always needed. The guidance on this page is general information, not advice about your own teeth. Whether this treatment is right for you can only be decided after an examination by one of our clinicians.

Appointments

Usually two, with laboratory time in between.

Materials

Metal-free E-max and zirconia are listed on our price list; others are quoted after assessment.

Aftercare

Clean around the crown margin carefully — the edge is where problems start.

Considerations

A crowned tooth can still decay at the margin, so examinations and hygiene visits matter.

About these images. Every photograph here comes from Liphook Smile Studio's own website — none is stock and none is AI-generated. They are shown as a clinical gallery rather than as before-and-after pairs, because the source site does not state which image is which. Supply matched, consented pairs and they will replace these.
Questions

Crowns FAQs

If your question is not here, please ask when you contact the practice.

Why do I need a crown instead of a filling?

Where too little natural tooth remains, a filling may not hold or may risk the tooth fracturing. Your dentist will explain what they can see in your particular tooth.

How long does a crown last?

It varies with the tooth, your bite and how well the margin is kept clean. Your dentist will give you a realistic expectation rather than a guaranteed figure.

Will it match my other teeth?

Shade is chosen with you before the crown is made. For front teeth, extra care is taken over translucency and surface character.

Does having a crown hurt?

The tooth is numbed for preparation. Some sensitivity afterwards is common and usually settles; tell us if it does not.

What if my crown comes loose?

Contact the practice. Do not try to re-fix it yourself. Recementing is listed on our price list, though the tooth needs assessing first.
