Gum Disease

Gum disease is common, often painless, and treatable — particularly when it is picked up early.

Overview

About Gum Disease

Gum disease is inflammation and infection of the tissues supporting your teeth. In its early stage, gingivitis, the gums are inflamed and may bleed when brushed. Left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, where the supporting bone is affected.

It is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and it is frequently painless, which is why it can advance without being noticed. Assessment involves measuring around each tooth and, where appropriate, x-rays.

Step by step

How the treatment works

  1. Assessment

Gums are measured around each tooth; x-rays where appropriate.

  2. Explanation

What the measurements mean, in plain language.

  3. Treatment

Professional cleaning above and below the gum line.

  4. Home care

Technique and tools tailored to your mouth — this part does most of the work.

  5. Review

Remeasured to check the response and plan maintenance.

Suitability

Who is it for?

If your gums bleed when you brush, feel tender or swollen, or if you have noticed bad breath, receding gums or loose teeth, it is worth being assessed. Bleeding gums are common, but they are not normal, and they are the most frequent early sign.

A professional assessment is always needed. The guidance on this page is general information, not advice about your own teeth. Whether this treatment is right for you can only be decided after an examination by one of our clinicians.

About these images. Every photograph here comes from Liphook Smile Studio's own website — none is stock and none is AI-generated. They are shown as a clinical gallery rather than as before-and-after pairs, because the source site does not state which image is which. Supply matched, consented pairs and they will replace these.
Questions

Gum Disease FAQs

If your question is not here, please ask when you contact the practice.

Is bleeding when I brush normal?

Common, but not normal. It usually signals inflammation, and it is worth having assessed rather than brushing more gently and hoping it settles.

Can gum disease be cured?

Early gingivitis can usually be reversed. More advanced periodontitis is managed rather than cured — the aim is to stop it progressing and keep your teeth.

Will I lose teeth?

Not necessarily. Much depends on how advanced it is and how well it responds. Your dentist will be straight with you about the outlook after assessment.

Does treatment hurt?

Cleaning below the gum line can be uncomfortable in inflamed areas. Local anaesthetic can be used, and it usually becomes more comfortable as the gums improve.

How often will I need treatment?

That depends on how your gums respond and your own risk factors. Intervals are set after reviewing your progress.
