Root Canal Treatment

Careful treatment of an infected or inflamed nerve, with the aim of saving the tooth rather than removing it.

Overview

About Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment addresses infection or inflammation in the pulp — the soft tissue inside the tooth containing its nerve and blood supply. It is often what stands between keeping a tooth and losing it.

The treatment involves cleaning the root canal system, shaping it, and sealing it to prevent reinfection. A tooth treated this way usually needs a crown afterwards to protect it, and your dentist will discuss that as part of the plan.

Benefits

Keeps your own tooth

The aim is to save the tooth rather than extract it.

Addresses the source

Treats the infection rather than masking the symptom.

Restores function

With a suitable restoration, the tooth can work normally again.

Preserves the gap-free arch

Avoids the knock-on effects of losing a tooth.

Step by step

How the treatment works

  1. Diagnosis

Examination and x-rays to confirm what is happening inside the tooth.

  2. Anaesthetic

The tooth is numbed thoroughly before anything begins.

  3. Cleaning

The canal system is cleaned and shaped.

  4. Sealing

The canals are filled and sealed against reinfection.

  5. Restoration

A permanent restoration, often a crown, protects the tooth.

Suitability

Who is it for?

Root canal treatment may be recommended where the pulp is infected or irreversibly inflamed — often signalled by persistent pain, sensitivity that lingers after hot or cold, or swelling. Diagnosis needs an examination and usually x-rays; symptoms alone are not enough to be certain.

A professional assessment is always needed. The guidance on this page is general information, not advice about your own teeth. Whether this treatment is right for you can only be decided after an examination by one of our clinicians.

Questions

Root Canal Treatment FAQs

If your question is not here, please ask when you contact the practice.

Is root canal treatment painful?

The tooth is thoroughly numbed, and most people find the treatment itself comparable to having a filling. Much of the reputation comes from the pain of the infection beforehand rather than the treatment.

Why not just take the tooth out?

Extraction is sometimes the right answer, but keeping your own tooth usually avoids the knock-on effects of a gap. Your dentist will set out both options honestly.

Will I need a crown afterwards?

Often, yes, particularly for back teeth. A root-treated tooth can become brittle, and a crown protects it. This is discussed as part of the plan and cost.

How successful is it?

Root canal treatment is well established, but no dental treatment succeeds every time. Your dentist will discuss the outlook for your particular tooth.

What if it flares up again?

Contact the practice. Re-treatment or referral may be appropriate, and we will assess before advising.
